NOVEMBER 15, 2004: MORE UNPLANNED DOWNTIME

Comcast assigned us new IP addresses over the weekend, and our DNS servers did not catch up until I could restart the servers today (Monday) - Thanks to Anil for helping me out; all sites and services are operational at this time.
(UPDATE FOR 11/16/2004:  Services were down again from about 3:00PM today til 9PM Eastern, due to an unknown problem)

NOVEMBER 1, 2004: UNPLANNED DOWNTIME
  OVER THE WEEKEND!

Guess the ghosts and goblins at Comcast were playing over the weekend, and we lost BOTH our servers' connections!  Everything is up and running now, and I will be compensating my clients accordingly... also to those who use our Yahoo relay, things should be smoother now, and remember we WILL have some downtime next weekend... so be prepared.

OCTOBER 30, 2004: PLANNED DOWNTIME FOR
MAIL/MESSAGE BOARD SERVER

On SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6, we will be doing a major upgrade to our mail and message board server to accommodate more users.  As such, expected downtime will be from around Noon to 6:00 PM Eastern while we rebuild our databases and clean up old records. Keep watching the mail "status" light on http://www.ruggieroav.com to stay posted on our progress.

OCTOBER 29, 2004: SHOUTCAST SERVER PROBLEMS

Problems with our third-party DNS service has left our Shoutcast server inaccessible from the outside.  I will try to get the broadcast up by the usual time, but it may be delayed for a bit, or may not even run at all.
UPDATE:  SHOUTCAST DID RUN IN SELECT AREAS OVER THE WEEKEND - APOLOGIES TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT CONNECT!

AUGUST 13, 2004: ROUTER, IP ADDRESS ISSUES

Overnight there was a slight change in our network configuration from our ISP [Comcast] which caused BOTH servers to stay offline until our routers could be reset. (this date falls on a Friday, so it wasn't exactly lucky, was it?)   ;-)

JULY 14, 2004: POWER PROBLEMS

At around 10:30 AM Eastern, we lost power at our server facility, causing a reboot, even though they remained online due to our UPS backup.  I did not reset the mail and message board servers until many hours after the reboot, so mail was offline during that time.  Apologies.

JUNE 25, 2004: FACILITIES MOVE COMPLETED
AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

To all website customers... thanks for hanging in there with us as as we made our transition! Our new repair facility address is up on the Ruggiero AV Services information page.
*** UPDATE (6/26 and 6/27) FROM THE "ADMIN IS A DOPE" DEPARTMENT: I made a mistake when updating DNS records yesterday, and mail services were down for a while.  Sorry!  Also, to my pal at Parcel Place ... try not to "play" too much with the new broadband services, okay?

JUNE 15, 2004: NEW YAHOO WEB MAIL,
AND UPDATE ON FACILITIES

To my customers using Yahoo e-mail - they have made some major changes to the layout of their site, and I have been testing the new POP 3 gateway software from the vendor - I believe everything still works fine with the version currently installed, but I have the updated version ready to install if needed.  Please let me know if problems arise.  The new software version will be installed by default when we move server locations, which will hopefully be in the next 2 weeks.  Our new address is up on the Ruggiero AV Services information page.

MAY 20, 2004: FACILITIES MOVE CONFIRMED!

Though my "heart" will always be in Roselle Park, NJ, circumstances have caused me to consider a move.  There will actually be TWO moves, in parallel to each other... the servers will be managed from a facility in Linden, NJ, and our repair shop (as well as Shoutcast transmission facilities) will move to Union, NJ. The move will be complete by July 3, 2004, and I hope to have no loss in web service during this transition period.  Email and message board services will be down for a short time during the move.   Keep watching this page for updates, and the RUGGIERO AV SERVICES page for our new address.  Phone, FAX, and e-mail address will not change.

MAY 5, 2004: E-MAIL/FORUM SERVER DOWNTIME;
COULD BE RELATED TO "SASSER"

As of this writing (9:40AM Eastern), some customers cannot get their Yahoo e-mail via Outlook Express or access our message boards.
This problem may be ISP-related OR it may be due to the still-spreading "Sasser" virus; because that server functions as a mail relay as well, it is more open to the possibility of attack... I will address the issue today at 3:30PM Eastern.

APRIL 27, 2004: NEW IP ADDRESS: APOLOGIES
FOR THE DOWNTIME

Both of our machines are on a completely new segment of Comcast's network  - using IP ranges I've never seen before.  These new addresses were obtained around 4AM Eastern time, but as usual not everything worked as it was supposed to, so we were in limbo once again until our DNS servers caught up.  Hopefully these current addresses will stick for some time, at least until the end of the Summer.  By the way, a "facilities" move may be underway; keep watching this page for the latest!

APRIL 5, 2004: SLOW WEB SITE RESPONSE:
ADDRESSED AND RESOLVED

Apologies to any customers who were experiencing poor performance of their sites over the past two days.  It seems that Comcast forced another "push" of the modem, but it did not complete correctly, so I had to manually reset it again today at around 3:30PM Eastern.  Site response is normal again.
UPDATE 4/6/04, 12:30AM - COMCAST IS PERFORMING MAINTENANCE ON THE NODE WHICH CARRIES OUR MAIL AND MESSAGE BOARD SERVER. ETA TO COMPLETION IS 6 AM EASTERN TIME.

MARCH 8, 2004: NEW SERVER FOR E-MAIL
AND MESSAGE BOARD

Turns out I was running too much on that little Compaq server after all - it's now be delegated to LAN duties only.  I have a new machine in operation for e-mail (Yahoo relay), as well as for the message board.  Sorry for the downtime this morning - Comcast was down here, and then I thought they assigned me a new IP address... but everything is cool now!

MARCH 6, 2004: SHOUTCAST PROBLEMS [AGAIN] :-(

These past two weeks we've been having broadcast problems past 1:15PM Eastern time - I did discover and fix the problem, which involved our local network -- but not before the broadcast was effected, so I apologize to my listeners if you were only able to hear up to "classics" part of our current playlist.

FEBRUARY 16, 2004:  NOT OFF FOR PRESIDENTS' DAY;
APPOINTMENTS CANCELLED

My primary place of employment is still the Roselle Park public schools... as we have had 3 inclement weather days resulting in school closure, the Board has voted to use February 16th as an emergency snow day... because more bad weather is expected.   Either way, I will not be able to come in to the shop until late, so all morning and afternoon appointments or service calls have been CANCELLED. I will contact individuals by phone and e-mail to reschedule. If you were planning on PICKING UP a system or contacting me by phone, you may do so after 4:00 PM Eastern.

FEBRUARY 4, 2004:  PLANNED OUTAGE FOR BOTH SERVERS

Our web and e-mail/message board servers will be down for about 10 minutes today; starting at 4:00PM Eastern.  There are some necessary Windows 2000 updates I want to apply.  Thank you!

JANUARY 27, 2004:  APOLOGIES FOR THE DOWNTIME

Our main website was down from around 2:30PM Eastern to 9:30PM Eastern... I put up an "error" page on our backup machine to inform site visitors, then proceeded to figure out how I was going to quickly restart.  Due to inclement weather and lack of physical transportation to the server facility, I decided to remotely restart the server... while it WORKED, the process didn't actually kick in for about 30-40 minutes after I sent the command; then our DNS servers had to catch up, so we were in a "loop" for a while.   We're okay now, and thanks to this episode, I've instituted a better backup and recovery scheme for unplanned outages.
