Aptiva 2159 Split Series CD ROM Audio Cable
According to IBM, the CD-ROM audio cable on it's Split Series Aptiva is
connected to the Media Console's Host Adapter card.

  If you find yourself replacing your IBM installed sound card and cannot find this
audio cable attached to that host adapter card, take a look a couple of
inches above the host card.  You will see an 1/8inch audio jack in the
top rear of the tower. The audio cable you are attempting to replace in
order to get sound from your CD ROM drive is hard wired to that audio jack within
your case, to the case's wall.  In order to get sound through both speakers from
your CD ROM drive through that new sound card, you will need to rewire/splice IBM's
installed CD ROM audio cable, or follow the directions in Option 2 below.

Option 1 (rewire/splice)
The colors on the IBM internal, 4 pin, audio cable that run
from the Stingray to the cases body are as follows -

RED = right channel
WHITE = ground
GREEN or BLUE = left channel
The outer loose wiring is ground too.
The Black connector cable that comes with a Sound Blaster AWE64
has connectors colored as follows -

WHITE = right channel
YELLOW = ground
TAN OR PINK = left channel
The outer loose wiring = ground
When you cut the IBM cable, make sure you leave enough room on the part you are taking
off so that you can reconnect it to the Mwave if you should ever need to and store it in a safe place.

You attach the above colors to the proper color channels on each wire, including the grounds.  I used little
tubes, called butt connectors, to slide the wires into and crimp them together.  They worked well..
Electrical tape was used for the ground that was the outer wrapping on the wires.

Now your IBM CD ROM audio cable's connector will fit onto your new sound card and you will
have sound coming out both of your speakers. Connect it to the proper place on the sound card.

**Use these instructions at your own risk.
They have worked for me on my 2159-S78 as well as many other 2159 Aptiva owners.**
Option 2 (no cutting anything)
No internal changes are necessary and there is no need to cut anything.
If your sound card has a LINE IN jack, simply UNPLUG the green-tipped wire that is
currently connected to IBM's CD jack (has a green "musical note" on it) and plug it into your new
card's line-in jack. Adjust CD ROM audio via the LINE input on your mixer.

To help match volume levels with the rest of your equipment (since adjusting CD audio
 within a game no longer works), you can purchase Radio Shack's inline headphone
volume control, CAT#42-2459. In this case, attach the green plug to the inline volume
control FIRST, then to the line input.  The volume on the control does not necessarily
have to be adjusted; if it is kept at max, it provides as much output level as the Mwave did.
