MODEM FILES LOCKED?
That's a normal message. Simply restart your computer to
complete the update. The "locked files" message is similar to any message
Windows gives you when you update new hardware (you must restart your computer
before the new settings will take effect).
STILL CONNECTING AT 26.4????
It's very possible, since the Mwave is a software modem, and thus
is more sensitive to line noise at higher speeds. I have had reports on
connection rates from a stable 33.6, to 44K and even 48K. If your modem
connected at 26.4 before, there usually isn't a drastic difference in initial
connection but the connection you DO have is "smoother and more stable"
according to my own tests, and user reports. You can confirm this by trying
various downloads, and making note of the download speed.
IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO TO IMPROVE MY MODEM'S
PERFORMANCE?
A: CHANGE PORT SPEED
1. Click START, point to SETTINGS, then click CONTROL PANEL.
2. Double-click MODEMS.
3. Your Mwave should be highlighted... click PROPERTES.
4. Under Maximum Speed, choose 115200. Do NOT check "only connect at this
speed."
5. Click the CONNECTION tab, then PORT SETTINGS.
6. Set the RECEIVE buffer to Maximum, and click OK.
7. Click the ADVANCED button.
8. Make sure "use error control" and "compress data" are checked.
9. If there are any strings in the EXTRA SETTINGS dialog, make a note of
them, and then remove them.
10. Click OK twice then CLOSE, and close out of Control Panel.
11. Restart.
B: If you're NOT using AOL, delete and re-create your dialup connection
using the steps below. If you ARE using AOL, you may try selecting a
new modem / modem type in AOL's setup dialog. Most recent AOL versions
will have the Mwave modem as an actual hardware choice, rather than a generic
modem.
1. Double click on "My Computer" icon.
2. Double click on the "Dial-Up Networking" folder.
3. Click ONCE on your current dialup connection, and click DELETE. Say YES
when prompted.
4. Double click on "Make New Connection" icon.
5 Name the new connection whatever you want.
6. Click on the "Configure" button.
7. On the "General" tab select your com port and maximum port speed.
8. Click the "Next" button.
9. Type in the Number you dial to reach your ISP.
10. Click the "Next" button.
11. Click the "Finish" button.
12. Right click on the newly-created connection icon. Click "Properties"
13. Click the "Server Type" button.
14. In the Type of Dial up Server, select "PPP: Internet, Windows NT Server,
Windows 98".
15. In the upper section, make sure the only item selected is "Enable
Software Compression".
16. In the lower section make sure the only item selected is "TCP/IP"
17. Click "OK".
15. Double-click your connection - fill in your username and password.
16. Check the box to "remember" the password if you wish.
17. Click CONNECT to dial up and log on.
C: Overclock the Mwave card's resources:
1. See this link:
http://members.aol.com/donnaskani/overclock.html
2. A good setting to try in the mwave.ini file is: IPS=35000000
3. Be sure to make note of the ORIGINAL VALUE so you may change it back if
problems persist.
4. Restart after making the change.
D: Consult your ISP and recheck the physical connection:
1. Check your ISP for a phone number that supports the older X2 protocol
along with V.90
2. Try using a shorter cable from the wall to the modem, as a software
modem is more sensitive to line noise.
