Restoring Microsoft Works 4.0
on an IBM Aptiva

APTIVA Axx, Mxx, Cxx

If you have WinZip or similar UNZIP program installed here is one method of restoring and running the Works setup files:

1.    Insert your Product Recovery CD
2.    Click Start > Point to Programs > Click Windows Explorer
3.    Open the \RECOVERY\US directory
4.    Right-Click on the APTIVA30.ZIP file (in Cxx or Aptiva43.zip in Axx/Mxx)
5.    Click Extract To
6.    Under Extract To Type C:\ > Click Extract
7.    Enter the password magic (in lowercase) > Click OK
8.    Click Start > Click Run
9.    Type C:\WORKS40\DISK1\SETUP.EXE > Click OK
10.  This will launch the MS Works Setup.  If you are REINSTALLING Works, you'll get

options to either reinstall your existing Works software or uninstall and reinstall Works.
The latter is often more effective but if you do so backup or move any saved files in your
       Documents folder  (C:\Program Files\Msworks\Documents)

APTIVA Sxx

I don't know why, but the Microsoft Works 4.0 setup files ARE NOT INCLUDED on the 2159 Sxx recovery CD.  IBM pre-installed Works prior to taking the recovery "snapshot" and there is no way to simply run a SETUP program to re-install Works.  What follows, however is a method that has worked for me and one other user.

Prerequisite:

http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/JWOE-3HXJCF.html

Once you've downloaded the file, created the diskette, and extracted the files to your hard drive, go to a DOS prompt, (START > PROGRAMS > MSDOS PROMPT)

1. Insert your Product Recovery CD and type:  RESTORE PROGRA~1\MSWORKS\*.*

then tap ENTER.

2. Type:
RESTORE PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\*.*

and tap ENTER.

3. Now, type EXIT and tap ENTER.

4. Press the START BUTTON, go to RUN, and click it. Type: "C:\PROGRAM
    FILES\MSWORKS\WORKS4.REG"

and tap ENTER. Include the quotes.

You should get a message that "works4.reg" has been successfully entered into the registry.

5. Next, press START, then click RUN. Type:
   "C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\MICROSOFT SHARED"

and tap ENTER. Include the quotes.

** You'll see a bunch of folders... Note, when the following instructions say to go UP ONE FOLDER LEVEL, it means to be looking at ALL the folders in the C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT SHARED folder.]

6. Double-click the ARTGALRY folder. Double-click ARTGALRY.EXE. You should get a
confirmation message that Art Gallery is configured.

7. Go up one folder level, and double-click the EQUATION folder. Double-click EQNEDT32.REG
(green blocks icon). You'll get the "successfully entered" message.

8. Go up one folder level, and double-click the MSDRAW folder. Double-click the MSDRAW icon.
You should get confirmation that MSDRAW is configured.

9. Go up one folder level, and double-click the NOTE-IT folder. Double-click the NOTE-IT icon
(picture). You should get a confirmation message that it is configured.

10. LAST, go up one folder level, and double-click the WORDART folder. Double-click the

WRDART32 icon (picture, not the blocks). You should get a message that it is configured.

11.  Close all folder windows, shut down your PC and restart Windows 95. Once Windows has
restarted, you can create a shortcut to Microsoft Works:

a) Right-click your desktop, choose NEW then SHORTCUT
b) Type "C:\PROGRAM FILES\MSWORKS\MSWORKS.EXE"
(including the quotes) and tap ENTER.
c) Type MICROSOFT WORKS 4.0 and press ENTER. Double-click this shortcut
to launch Works - I hope!

If this works, congratulations! If not, there's one last thing you can try. Go to http://works.msn.com/Homepages/ProductUpdates.asp#EnglishY2k
for the Works Y2K update.  Download it, install it, and restart your computer. Try launching Works again (Note, if the Y2K update was successful, Microsoft Works will now be VERSION 4.5a, and sport a new splash screen).
